सुभाषितम्

आदानस्य प्रदानस्य कर्तव्यस्य च कर्मणः ।
क्षिप्रमक्रियमाणस्य कालः पिबति तद्रसम् ॥

सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागारम् – १५९/२९१

ādānasya pradānasya kartavyasya ca karmaṇaḥ ।
kṣipramakriyamāṇasya kālaḥ pibati tadrasam ॥

पदच्छेदः

आदानस्य, प्रदानस्य, कर्तव्यस्य, च, कर्मणः, क्षिप्रम्, अक्रियमाणस्य, कालः, पिबति, तत्, रसम् ।

तात्पर्यम्

हस्तस्य शोभा दानकारणेन भवति, कण्ठस्य शोभा सत्यभाषणेन भवति, कर्णस्य शोभा शास्त्राणां श्रवणेन भवति । अतः स्वर्णादि-अलङ्कारैः किं प्रयोजनम् ?

आङ्ग्लार्थः

Whatever you have to return back to others or whichever work has to be done by you, please do it in the expected time only (Don't delay too much). If you don't do this in time (You do it late) then the importance of that work vanishes (i.e. the effect of the work if done late will have no impact. Here the impact of the work that is done in time is compared to a sweet drink ('rasa')).
